Hundreds of San Carlos citizens came to the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, held on Thursday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m. Mayor Brad Lewis was joined by members of the City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission, Burton Park Playground Committee, Advocates for Accessible Recreation and the Parks and Recreation Foundation of San Carlos, and many of the individuals, families and businesses who helped make the playground possible. This was truly a community celebration of a two year design, fundraising and construction process.
A group of dedicated volunteer parents came together and enlisted the City of San Carlos, local businesses, community organizations and preschools to help dramatically improve the Burton Park Playgrounds. The Parks & Recreation Foundation of San Carloseagerly joined in the fundraising efforts. The City has committed $415,000 from Capital Improvment Program (CIP) appropriations for this project. Thanks to the volunteer committee and the generosity of the San Carlos community and businesses, we have reached the goal of $850,000 for this project. The result of these community efforts is a complete overhaul of the two existing Burton Park playgrounds as well as a new, fun water spray area. Burton Park will house the first fully inclusive playground in San Mateo County.
