Biography of City Clerk - Christine D. Boland

Biography

Christine D. Boland entered the public service arena in 1983 when she was plucked out of her legal secretarial part-time job in Half Moon Bay to work as the  Executive Secretary of the San Mateo County Harbor Commission.  After 3-1/2 years, she moved to the "sunny side" and was employed for 11 years at the San Mateo County Transit District as the Board of Director's Administrative Clerk, where she met her husband, Patrick.  In 1998, Christine followed her dream of becoming a City Clerk and applied for her current position of Assistant City Clerk for the City of San Carlos.  Low and behold the part-time elected position was vacated and Christine ran, unopposed, for elected office in 1999 and is currently serving a third term.  Realizing that the City Clerk's role in municipal government is nothing to be taken lightly, she and then Mayor Bob Grassilli sat down and wrote the ballot argument (Measure "V", 2009) in favor of making the position appointed.  Measure V passed overwhelmingly, and Christine will become the last elected Clerk to serve in the City of San Carlos when her term expires in November 2011.

Born and raised in Half Moon Bay, Christine and attended school there.  Following graduation from Half Moon Bay High School ("Go Big Orange") , she decided to take a chance and enroll at the College of San Mateo while working full-time.  One class and one great teacher later led to an Associate degree and transferring to the College of Notre Dame (now University of Notre Dam de Namur), in Belmont.  In between City Council meetings and getting married, Christine felt the need to follow in the footsteps of then City Manager Mike Garvey and current Assistant City Manager, Brian Moura, and proceeded down the path to a Master's degree at the California State University, Hayward, and graduated in 2005 with her original cohort for a very philosophically-based degree in Public Administration.

Christine is a "Certified Municipal Clerk" and is the 2010-11 President of the Rotary Club of San Carlos, and serves as Vice Chair of Provident Credit Union's Supervisory Committee.  She is a member of the City Clerks' Association of California, the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, and is a charter member of the "Broad Vision" a local high-powered ladies' lunch bunch.   She was most recently seen as the Master of Ceremonies of the Chamber of Commerce's annual Gala dinner, which honored Jim Fahnestock as the 2010 Citizen of the Year.   Christine resides in the City of Good Living with her amazing husband Patrick, and their two children, Thomas Patrick, 9, and Julia Christine, 7.
