|SAN CARLOS, November 22, 2016 –The League of American Bicyclists has recognized San Carlos with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award. With the announcement of 26 new and 77 renewing BFCs, San Carlos joins a leading group of communities that are transforming our neighborhoods. There are now 404 communities nationwide that are currently recognized with a BFC award for their efforts to make biking safer and more accessible.|
The Bicycle Friendly Community program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate their quality of life and sustainability and transportation needs, while allowing them to benchmark their progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. The Bronze BFC award recognizes San Carlos' commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies. The BFC program provides a benchmark for communities to evaluate these conditions and policies, while highlighting areas for improvement.
"The City of San Carlos is committed to providing residents with a variety of alternative transportation options, which includes bicycling. Being designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community recognizes the progress we have made so far and the goals we have set for the future," said Mayor Cameron Johnson. “Many San Carlans already bike to work, school and downtown. As we make more improvements in bike accommodations and safety, even more people will choose to leave their cars at home.”
The BFC program provides a roadmap to building a Bicycle Friendly Community and the application itself has become an educational tool that can be used to comprehensively review a communities bicycle efforts. The award has various levels of designations – diamond, platinum, gold, silver, bronze and an honorable mention – providing a clear incentive for communities to continuously improve.
As part of the award, the City of San Carlos received a road sign that will be installed and unveiled at a ceremony on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in front of San Carlos City Hall located at 600 Elm Street, San Carlos, CA 94070.
