Sales Tax by Segment
Sales tax data is generated by each business that provides taxable products and services. By making this information available over time, comparisons are possible to identify trends that are tied to specific variables. The sales tax data is divided into seven segments: Building & Construction, Business & Industry, General Consumer Goods, Food & Drugs, Fuel & Service Station, Restaurant & Hotels, Auto & Transportation, and Transfers & Unidentified. Information on sales tax by segment provides data that can be measured by comparing fluctuations in the market and local market conditions. This fluctuation can be affected by the number of establishments or the health of a particular category. In 2013 over 54% of the sales taxes generated came from the Building & Construction and Business & Industry. These two segments tend to be the economic drivers in the City followed by General Consumer Goods and Restaurant & Hotel businesses.
