Public Works - Holly Street Traffic Congestion Relief
The Opportunity for Improving Traffic on Holly Street
Traffic congestion on Holly Street between Industrial Road and El Camino Real in San Carlos has been a challenge for many years. The corridor serves as the main thoroughfare connecting travelers in San Carlos with Highway 101. In an effort to ease the congestion, on July 14th, the San Carlos City Council approved restricted parking on Holly Street between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Public Works staff modified the striping and signage to match the new hours.
Over 25 years ago, in an attempt to reduce some of the congestion, parking restrictions on Holly Street were established during weekdays only based on peak commute times. The goal was to keep parking available when residents were home most often (after 7:00 in the evening, during overnight hours and all day on Saturday and Sunday). However, the busiest times on Holly Street have now expanded throughout the day, as traffic counts taken in both 2006 and 2013 show. These counts reveal that, on average, between 500-600 vehicles per hour traverse the corridor between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.
