The San Mateo Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and City of San Carlos are jointly hosting a design competition to beautify and identify the City’s primary and secondary entrances or “gateways.”

The Gateway Design Competition informational kick-off meeting will be held on Saturday May 14, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at San Carlos City Hall, 600 Elm Street, San Carlos, followed by a self-guided tour of the primary gateway sites.

The design submittal deadline is Monday June 13, 2011 by 5:00 p.m.  The City will have the option of using the winning designs for the future construction of gateways as funding becomes available.

The Gateway Design Competition is open to all architects, landscape architects, artists, design students and design professionals who wish to participate.  The City is looking for a palette of designs that could include signs, structural elements, landscaping, statues, major works of public art, or any landmark feature or element that would help orient people and identify the City’s entrances.

Awards of $1,250 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place will be presented by the San Mateo Chapter of the AIA.
