REI Dedicates Largest Solar System in San Carlos on Sunday, November 16th

On Sunday, REI San Carlos will be celebrating the activation of the largest solar installation in the City of San Carlos. The system is part of a chain-wide program at REI to continue to further green their facilities. REI San Carlos says that 40% of the store's power will now be provided by the new solar system.

The "Solar Celebration" will run from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday. REI San Carlos is inviting everyone to come and celebrate this milestone with REI San Carlos customers, some of their closest non-profit organization partners as well as members of San Carlos Green and the City of San Carlos staff. REI San Carlos will also provide information about their solar conversion and give away some fun raffle prizes.

We’re very proud that REI chose San Carlos as one of the first sites of their solar initiative. Hopefully it will inspire other San Carlos businesses to look at Solar Power to cut their energy bills in the future.

San Mateo County Green Business Program Awards Event on Wednesday

County Supervisor Mark Church will be kicking off a Green Business Recognition Lunch at the Turpin Aviation Museum at SFO next Wednesday. The event will be in honor of the initial group of Certified Green Businesses in the County. Awards will be presented by ABAG, San Mateo County, SBWMA and SFO.

San Carlos will have a featured role at the event since we have the highest number of Certified Green Businesses in the County. In fact, we’re told that fully 1/3 of all San Mateo County Certified Green Businesses are in San Carlos!

List of 17 San Carlos Certified Green Businesses on City Web Site

To make it easier to find and do business at a local Certified Green Business, we have prepared a list of the 17 San Carlos businesses that have been certified as meeting the high standards of the Bay Area Green Business Program to date and posted it in the Green section of the City Web Site. The certification process includes completing a rigorous 11 page self-assessment questionnaire and inspections of each firm's practices in several areas including Water Conservation, Energy Conservation and Recycling.

The City of San Carlos is proud to be one of the charter members of the rollout of the Bay Area Green Business Program in San Mateo County. We encourage all San Carlos businesses to consider joining the ranks of these local firms in becoming a Certified Bay Area Green Business.

Proposed Food Scraps and Organics Collection Program in San Carlos

The City of San Carlos staff is working with the SBWMA, Allied Waste of San Mateo County and San Carlos Green to develop a rollout and marketing effort for the City’s upcoming Food Scraps and Organics recycling program. If the proposed fee increase needed to fund the program is approved at the next City Council Meeting, orders will go in for the collection vehicle and the food "pails" that residents will use in the program.

The plan is to enable San Carlos residents to participate and enjoy the benefits of residential food scraps and organics collection in March 2009, almost two full years ahead of the balance of the cities and other member agencies in the SBWMA. A sample food pail for the program is now on display in the 2nd Floor City Hall lobby if you’d like to give it a look.

Update on Shoreway Environmental Center Project in San Carlos

Four agencies in the SBWMA (the cities of San Mateo, Redwood City, Foster City and San Carlos) have approved a proposal to issue up to $65 Million to implement the Shoreway Master Plan. The plan includes removing the current Materials Resource Facility (MRF) building on Shoreway Road and replacing it with a new, span-free building to house a new "Single Stream" recycling facility and over $15 Million in new Single Stream equipment.

The new building would enable more flexibility in setting up equipment than the current 40-year old building that was originally a hospital laundry business. Other project improvements would include fixing internal site and traffic back ups on Shoreway Road, bringing the building up to the LEED Silver Standard envisioned in local Green Building Codes (like those adopted already by San Mateo County and the City of San Mateo), installing piles to address the soil issues on the site and building offices for the new facility operator.

To address questions about the cost of the facility modernization, tours of the existing Shoreway Facility will be offered to elected officials in all 12 agencies starting next week. A briefing on the project funding, plans for the new facility and presentations by the two firms selected as finalists to operate the new facility (Hudson Baylor and South Bay Recycling) will be held in January. For more information visit the Shoreway Master Plan section of the SBWMA Web Site. It includes Site Plans, the Architect's Video, the Shoreway Center Fact Sheet, and a set of FAQs.
