ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/ASSISTANT CITY ENGINEER
DEFINITION
Under general direction of the Public Works Director, plans, directs, supervises and reviews the activities of a variety of projects and programs throughout the Public Works Department, including engineering and public works maintenance.Provides professional and technical staff assistance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General direction is provided by the Public Works Director.Responsibilities include the direct and indirect supervision of engineering staff and maintenance division personnel.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
·Manages engineering Division and provides technical assistance to Public Works Superintendent.
·Organizes work, evaluates employee performance and takes corrective action as necessary to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity.
·Trains and motivates employees to ensure reasonable professional growth and effective work attitudes.
·Assists in preparation of the City capital improvement program.
·Assists in preparation of the work program and annual budget.
·Prepares staff reports for City Council, Planning Commission and other advisory committees and commissions.
·Supervises the design and construction of capital improvement projects.
·Acts as technical advisor to City Council, City Manager and department heads on engineering problems.
·Supervises, coordinates and reviews the construction, operation and maintenance of the sewage collection system, storm drain system.
·Supervises, coordinates and reviews the construction, operation and maintenance of all traffic related systems and equipment.
·Reviews all private development plans including, tentative maps, final maps and subdivision improvement plans.
·Appears before commissions, committees and the City Council.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to the development and construction of public works projects; methods, materials, techniques and equipment used in the construction, operation and maintenance of sewage collection systems; principles and practices of organization, administration, budget and personnel management.
Ability to plan and direct the work of subordinates; design, estimate and prepare specifications for capital improvement projects; maintain effective working relationships with other City department staff; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:Five years of increasingly responsible experience in professional civil engineering work involving public works design, construction and maintenance projects, including at least three years in a supervisory capacity.
Education:Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of California.
