Definition

This position is designed to provide an entry level work path for people interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.The position is a non-sworn classification and most duties performed are of a routine and standardized nature in support of the Police Department.Some duties performed are of a First Responder nature and can include providing CPR/First Aid and major injury accident response and investigation.Community Service Officers relieve staff members from a variety of details and work regular or irregular hours on a part-time basis.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direct supervision from Police Sergeants or Officers in charge; receives general supervision from Police Officers.

Essential and Important Duties

  • Responds to, and investigates, major injury accidents, including providing medical attention, interviewing involved parties and witnesses, gathering evidence and preparing report for supervisor review.
  • Responds to medical emergency calls, including calls that require First Aid and CPR.
  • Supervises parking enforcement and traffic control for municipal parking lots and parks, on foot and in a vehicle.
  • Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Serves as a crossing guard at designated intersections.
  • Prepares a variety of reports on traffic accidents, crimes and incidents.Prepares police records.
  • Answers questions and gives information to the public concerning laws, regulations, and information of a general nature.
  • Makes deliveries and pick ups of materials to City officials and to other agencies.
  • Assists with the maintenance ofPolice Department vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with bike safety programs and enforcement.
  • Assists Police Officers, as directed, with non-hazardous tasks.

Other Job-Related Duties

  • Assist, as directed, with the Department’s Community Oriented Policing Program.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Conducts station tours.

Job-Related and Essential Qualifications

Ability to acquire, retain and use knowledge of the functions, procedures and policies of the department; read, interpret and apply local ordinances, rules and regulations; meet the public in a congenial but official manner; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action using good judgment; comprehend and accurately follow brief oral and written instructions; maintain records and prepare legible written reports; work with minimal supervision; and to be able to establish, maintain and foster cooperative working relations with others contacted in the course of work.

Education and Training

  • Applicants must have graduated from high school or possess a GED.
  • Current enrollment in college level courses related to law enforcement is desirable.

Special Requirements

Speak clearly and understandably; ability and stamina to drive a vehicle and patrol on foot; ability to work effectively and accurately in emergency situations; to hear alarms, voices and traffic sounds; to read; to reach.No prior felony convictions.Must possess the ability to learn and operate parking control vehicles, and the ability to lift heavy objects (such as bicycles, tires and wheels, car parts, etc.).The ability to operate a computer keyboard is highly desired.Community Service Officers must be able to work nights and weekends as needed, and must be able to pass the required background investigation.

Licenses, Certificates and Registration

Possession of an appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
