Public Works Inspector

Definition
This position is responsible for inspecting public works construction and capital improvement projects to insure conformance with plans, specifications and departmental regulations and to perform a variety of tasks relative to this area of responsibility.
Supervision Exercised and Received
Receives supervision from the Public Works Director/City Engineer and indirect supervision from the Civil Engineering Assistant.
Essential and Important Duties
Review plans and specifications of assigned projects with Civil Engineering Assistant and Public Works Director/City Engineer; attend pre-construction conferences.
Inspect materials for identification as conforming to specifications and plans.
Take samples of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories.
Inspect all phases of construction of public works and private improvements within public lands and easements.
Record amounts of materials used and work performed; prepare necessary reports for progress payments.
Indicate location of various appurtenances on plans.
Inspect adjacent properties for damage from construction activity.
Investigate resident complaints; confer with property owners regarding project schedule, hazards and inconvenience.
Help locate other utilities ahead of work sites.
Schedule service interruptions with least interference and least inconvenience to properties.
Prepare daily activity records and reports manually and in computer-based format.Prepare site sketches.
Coordinate work with other City departments and public utilities.
Job-Related and Essential Qualifications
Knowledge of materials sampling, testing and estimating procedures.Engineering mechanics of construction.Methods, materials, equipment and techniques used in the construction of public facilities and other appurtenances and structures.Applicable laws, regulations, codes and departmental policies governing the construction of assigned projects.Basic elements of electrical power services and controls.
Ability and skills to detect and locate faulty materials and workmanship and determine the stage of construction during which defects are most easily found and remedied.Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans and details. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with various construction site personnel including contractors, workers, property owners and developers.Basic computer skills including word processing and Excel software.Applicable laws, regulations, codes and departmental policies governing the construction of assigned projects.Perform the entire range of construction inspection activities with a minimum of supervision.
Education and Training
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training, preferably including an Associate Arts degree in engineering materials and design.
Other Requirements
Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.Must be willing to perform inspections in a variety of weather conditions and in areas requiring walking, climbing and standing.
