Awards Received from the California Parks and Recreation Society

  • Award of Excellence – Facility Design and Park Planning: Hillcrest Circle Park Renovation.
  • Champion of the Community Award: Wendy Walter and Laura Gottsman for their work on the Hillcrest Circle Park Renovation.
  • Award of Excellence – Best Activity Guide: Summer 2005 Activity Guide.

Awards Received from the California Parks and Recreation Society, District IV

  • Professional Merit Awards - San Carlos Parks and Recreation staff members Tonya Booker and Jennifer Moore were honored for their leadership, problem-solving skills and customer service delivery. In addition to their regular duties, Tonya and Jennifer have spent a tremendous number of hours, over 350 hours each this past year, supporting a proposal to convert over-used San Carlos playing fields to synthetic turf fields.
  • Professional Merit Award - Kristine Pardini was recognized for her contributions which significantly exceed the normal job duties. Kristine in collaboration with the Youth Center Foundation spearheaded an incredibly successful Annual Appeal in 2005 which raised over $30,000 in revenue for the Youth Center.

  • Volunteer Citation Awards - for significant contributions to Parks and Recreation programs, services and facilities: Ken Andersen was honored for his dedication as a volunteer tutor-mentor for the San Carlos Healthy Cities Tutoring Program. Ken began volunteering in 2002. His commitment to the program and to children has grown and he has also found time to volunteer on a weekly basis in the special education program at one of our elementary schools. Forbes King is 94 years old, but one would never know it. He has served as a volunteer tutor-mentor in the San Carlos Healthy Cities Tutoring Program since 1998. He also speaks in the community about his involvement with the tutor-mentor program in order to recruit more volunteers to serve.

  • Award of Excellence - “San Carlos Walks was recognized. As the recognized health and wellness leader of the community, our department wanted to give residents a new program to emphasize exercise, promote health, reduce chronic disease and prolong life. Recreation Supervisors Kathy Giraud and Tonya Booker decided to offer San Carlos Walks, an informal, free, noontime neighborhood walking program that meets faithfully twice a week.As one enthusiastic walker commented, “What a great way to exercise while meeting new people and enjoying the outdoors. It’s perfect!”
  • Award of Excellence - “Sequoia Hospital Health and Wellness Partnership with San CarlosYouth Center” was also recognized. The partnership between the San Carlos Youth Center and the Sequoia Hospital Health and Wellness Department has proven to be beneficial to our Youth Development program objective of increasing nutrition education for staff, parents and participants.All services provided by the Hospital have been at no cost to the YouthCenter.
