San Carlos Community Adopts Pass Christian, Mississippi

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, members of the San Carlos business and religious community wanted to reach out and provide ongoing support and relief. They formed a Steering Committee and approached San Carlos Vice Mayor Tom Davids, Assistant City Manager Brian Moura and Parks and Recreation Director Barry Weiss to obtain the City's involvement in this effort. The City has worked with this community-wide group to develop a plan to select a communty impacted by the hurricane and help it on an ongoing basis. The business and citizens Steering Committee decided to provide ongoing help and assistance to the community of Pass Christian, Mississippi in September 2005. The San Carlos City Council endorsed this decision and formally approved City participation in the effort at their September 29, 2005 meeting. They also authorized the City Finance Department to establish an account for donations to Pass Christian at that meeting. To start the donation process, Deputy City Manager Jeff Maltbie presented $500 from the City of San Carlos employees during that City Council meeting. Pass Christian is a town of about 14,000, including the surrounding areas, which was flooded by Hurricane Katrina. Whole neighborhoods, some half a mile from shore were leveled. Our goal is to help the city for the long haul, which may be from 2-4 years. It is an effort undertaken by the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce and the San Carlos Ministerial Association with participation by the City of San Carlos as noted above.
