Pictures of the event can be viewed by clicking on this link: Arguello Park - Pictures from the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony It is the largest and most uniquely diverse of our developed parks. It combines a large, heavily used turfed play area with trails and open space. The trails wind through the hillsides on three of the park’s four borders. The turfed area is used by Little League in the spring for practices and games; A.Y.S.O. and S.A.Y. Baseball in the fall for practices and games; and by the Parks and Recreation Department for the summer day camp program. The field house is used only for Day Camp activities. Fire danger is an ever-present concern in the park with the extensive trees and foliage. Several efforts have been made over the years to reduce the most severe areas, including neighborhood clean-up days and through use of the county Work Furlough Program. Two privately owned lots exist within the park's boundary lines. The Arguello Park Renovation Master Plan began in September 2001 with key stakeholder meetings and community meetings in October and December. The draft Arguello Master Plan, reflective of community input received throughout the process, was presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission on February 6, 2002. The Parks and Recreation Commission participated in a successful study session with RRM Design Group on February 21, 2002 to discuss the plan in greater depth and hear more public input. Another community meeting was held on February 8, 2003 at the San Carlos Senior Center to discuss the children’s play area design. Additional input has been gathered through email and through voicemail. The City put the project out to bid, and an acceptable bid was finally received and the project awarded in February, 2005. The construction contract for Phase One improvements was awarded to Robert Bothman, Inc., totaling approximately $1,500,000. Phase One improvements include trails and hillside stabilization; erosion control, new trailheads; athletic field improvements including drainage, irrigation with a new field and backstop; main picnic area renovation, play equipment; accessible access and parking; and safety lighting and parking lot gates. |
