Trails Connections Plan

Trails Connections

The City Council authorized establishment of the Trails Connections Committee as a City of San Carlos Task Force on April 14, 2003. The City Council directed the committee to begin discussion with other agencies regarding possible connections to San Carlos trails. This committee has been exploring the possibility of connecting existing trails in San Carlos with neighboring agencies and with other trails within San Carlos. The Parks and Recreation Commission at their January 10, 2007 meeting unanimously recommended to City Council approval of the plan. The City Council approved the Trails Connections Plan on February 12, 2007. This community led committee is working to connect existing trails in San Carlos with neighboring agencies and with other trails within San Carlos.

Fifteen possible connection points have been identified with eight identified as the first priority. These possible connection points are described in Attachment 1.

A map has been developed showing the possible connection points and is enclosed as Attachment 2 PDF icon (PDF document).

The Trails Connections Plan will benefit San Carlos in many ways. These potential connections will facilitate increased health and wellness activity, as citizens are able to walk, run, or hike additional venues and distances. We anticipate more residents to be aware of and involved in healthy, low impact recreation on a regular basis. All will enjoy scenic views and panoramic vistas. Citizens will be able to walk from Eaton or Big Canyon Park and continue on to other San Carlos locations, Pulgas Ridge, the Belmont Trails System, San Francisco Watershed land and possibly Edgewood Park. People living in the Crestview Drive area will be able to walk a significant distance toward downtown without getting in a car or walking on busy streets.

Initial contact has been made with other agencies, all of whom have expressed an interest in connecting with San Carlos. A formal request will be made, should the City Council approve the Trails Connections Plan. Discussions also may occur with private property owners in San Carlos regarding easements on their property. The committee will return, in the future, to the City Council through the Parks and Recreation Commission with formal recommendations for specific connections requiring easements or permission as required.
