Athletic Fields Update - March 16, 2007

Three proposals have been received for design and preparation of plans, specifications and cost estimates for installation of an athletic field at Heather School. The proposal addresses removal of the existing old soil base natural grass field and installation of a new soil base natural grass or an all weather synthetic turf on the site. Landscape architectural and or park planning professional firms were invited to submit a proposal to design and prepare plans, specifications and cost estimates for each alternative. These proposals will be reviewed by staff who will then recommend to City Council authorization for award of contract to one of the firms. A new long term lease between the School District and the City replacing the one to expire June 30, 2008 will be needed prior to award of contract. Through the 2 + 2 Committee the School Board and City Council are working on a new lease. Reflective of the good faith negotiations underway, and prior to finalization of the lease, staff will ask City Council for authorization to award the contract once the lease is signed. It is anticipated that City Council will determine the type of turf to be installed at the time of awarding the contract. It is also anticipated that should all weather synthetic turf be selected, a Request for Proposal will be recommended for approval for an environmental review.
