Athletic Fields - Evaluation & Consideration of Options

Background Information
Overused Athletic Fields & the Demand for More Hours

kids playing soccerThe need for additional play time on the City's athletic fields has significantly increased over the years.

San Carlos currently has approximately 7,500 users in organized sports activities. This figure does not include special events, drop-in activities or casual use of the fields. The biggest demand for athletic field time is in youth sports participation with approximately 6,000 users in San Carlos today.

The Parks and Recreation Department staff recognized with this level of demand, the athletic fields in San Carlos are overused. The staff also recognized that the City's fields had not been given adequate maintenance, replanting and rest between seasons.

Consideration of Athletic Field Options
Since receipt of the Mahady Report, the Parks and Recreation Department has held a series of committee and public meetings to address this option. In recent months, the staff has proposed that the Parks & Recreation Commission, the City Council and the San Carlos Elementary School District consider the installation of Synthetic Turf at athletic fields at Heather School and Highlands Park. The web links below provide more information about these discussions and options that are under review.
