The Need to Double The City's Athletic Field Inventory

The Field Use and Agronomic Specifications Report from Mahady & Associates was received and accepted by the City Council a year later in October 2001. In the report, Mahady concluded that the City would literally have to double its inventory of conventional grass athletic fields to sustain the current level of sports and play activity.

The report says that the usage of the City of San Carlos athletic fields in 2001 “represents 2.1 times as many hours as would be recommended to maintain a cool season grass sports field in good and safe condition. Based on the conservative data estimates presented in the 2001 Field Request Summary, the City of San Carlos would require approximately 31.2 acres of sports fields (20 sports fields measuring 1.5 acres), or approximately twice the 14.85 acres available today in order to reduce the number of factored hours to the recommended 425 hours per field.”

Recognizing that this option was not realistic, the Mahady report suggested an alternative. The alternative was to improve the wear tolerance on existing grass athletic fields in San Carlos by converting some of the existing natural grass surfaces to a synthetic turf surface.
