Neighborhood Pace Car Program

The Neighborhood Pace Car Program is a way for San Carlos residents and the San Carlos Police Department to work together in combating speeding Pace Car Logovehicles. This is an innovative program designed to form partnerships with the residents of San Carlos to act as "moving speed bumps," thus slowing traffic.

National Accident Statistics

  • In 2002 there were an estimated 6,316,000 police reported traffic crashes.
  • An average of 117 persons died in motor vehicle crashes in 2002—one every 12 minutes.
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 14,164 lives were saved in 2002 by the use of safety belts.
  • The economic cost of speeding-related crashes is estimated to be $40.4 billion each year.

How The Program Works

The program was first developed in Boise, Idaho and is currently being implemented inmany cities throughout the country. The premise of the program is based on citizen participation.

As a pace car driver, speed limits are strictly followed. Because these cars are driving the speed limit, the cars behind them must also drive the speed limit. The crux of this program is to promote responsibility of courteous and safe driving to the motorists.

It is for this reason the San Carlos Police Department encourages all residents to read and sign the Neighborhood Pace Car Pledge. Once that is done, you can proudly display your Pace Car sticker and know you are making a difference.

Pace Car Pledge Form

Pace CarResidents of San Carlos read and sign a pledge which basically asks them to abide by all of the traffic laws (speed law and pedestrian right of ways). Once the pledge has been signed, the residents are given a sticker which is displayed in the rear window. The sticker identifies the resident as a “Neighborhood Pace Car.”

Please complete the Pace Car Pledge Form and mail it to: San Carlos Police, Pace Car Program, 600 Elm Street, San Carlos CA 94070. Your decal will be sent to you.
