May I donate books to the San Carlos Library?
The library accepts hardcover and paperbacks in popular fiction, non-fiction, biographies, mysteries, spy thrillers, science fiction, westerns, romances, self-help, children's, classics, as well as CDs, videos, and cassettes. Sorry, but abridgements, textbooks, magazines, condensed books, and outdated or damaged material are not accepted. The drop-off slot is in the underground parking lot beneath the Library. May I renew books after the library is closed?
Yes, you may renew library items 24 hours a day by calling (650) 638-0399, or by going to the Peninsula Library System’s online catalog.  Click My Library Account and login with your library card number and PIN.  Then click either Renew All or select items to renew and click Renew Selected.

What facilities are at the San Carlos Library?
The library hosts story hours as well as special programs throughout the year. In addition to books, the library has newspapers, magazines, CDs, CD-Roms, books on tape, books on CD, videos, business directories, consumer materials, community information, copy machines, a CCTV, and public computers with access to the Internet. The San Carlos Library was equipped with a wireless network in Spring 2004.  For questions on accessing the network please visit the Library website.

The library also has two community rooms available for rental by San Carlos community based civic, educational and/or non-profit community groups or organizations.  For information on the use of the library's upper level community rooms, call (650) 802-4311. Due to reduced staffing, these requests will be processed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only.

Where is the San Carlos Library? What are its hours of operation?
The new San Carlos Library opened on Aug. 8, 1999, and is located at 610 Elm St., next to San Carlos City Hall. The main number for the library is (650) 591-0341.

The San Carlos Library is open:

  • 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday
  • 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday
  • 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday
  • 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday

The San Carlos Library is a member of the Peninsula Library System.

Your San Carlos library card gives you access to all the public and community college libraries in San Mateo County.

Who are the Friends of the Library and how can I contact them?
The Friends is a non-profit organization that brings together people who view their local library as a treasury of knowledge, information, and educational entertainment. The Friends promote community support and use of the library, inform members about issues affecting the library, and provide financial assistance to the library's collection and programs. They raise funds for supplemental materials and equipment through book sales, and sponsor cultural programs and events. Membership fees vary
