Arts and Culture Commission Minutes - January 9, 2006

The regular meeting of the Arts and Culture Commission was called to order at 5:40 P.M. by Mike Aydelott.

Correspondence

a. San Carlos Children’s Theatre-Fall Report 2005

Approval of Minutes

Minutes of November 7, 2005 were reviewed.Motion made to approve the minutes as written, M/S Strauss/Mahar.Motion carried 5.0.

Unfinished Business

a. Fine Arts Promotions

Motion made to add information and photos of the City art collection onto the City website for public access. M/S Strauss/ Mahar.Motion carried 5.0. Commissioner Hoffman will provide the electronic file to staff to upload onto the website.

b. Strategic Planning for City Art Purchases

Commissioners agreed to review City facilities and submit recommendations of locations for art placement.Chairperson Adyelott will compile a list of all recommendations for review and discussion at next Commission meeting.

c. Sesquicentennial Celebration

Commissioner Mahar requested information regarding grant funding availability for projects supporting the Sesquicentennial Celebration from the Sesquicentennial Committee.Superintendent Dillard will follow up with the County Committee liaison and report back to the Commission.

New Business

a. 2006-08 Budget Preparations

Commissioners approved Work Program accomplishments for FY 2005-06 and established Work Program objectives for the upcoming budget cycle to include:

  • Develop and implement community-wide festivals to highlight diverse cultural celebrations;
  • Develop grant process and grant funding to assist community organizations promoting historical or artistic activities in San Carlos;
  • Provide funding to upgrade San Carlos Museum display lighting;
  • Increase promotion and awareness of City’s art collection

Committee Reports

a. Sister Cities (Mahar)

Commissioner Mahar highlighted fund-raising efforts for Pass Christian.

b. San CarlosMuseum (Mahar)

Commissioner Mahar reported on the successful Open House event.

c. San Carlos Fine Arts Association (Hoffman)

Commissioner Hoffman reported on the new board installation, recognizing Patrick Leeper as the

incoming president.

d. Artshare (Aguirre)

Commissioner Aguirre reported on the successful Artshare luncheon in December, and activity on a membership drive.

e. Holiday Homes on Parade (Strauss)

Commissioner Strauss reported on the event, noting low response for entries and committee’s plans to mail out invitations to participate next year to help increase involvement.

f. Week of the Family (Strauss)

Commissioner Strauss noted the event will start Jan. 27th and end on Feb. 3rd.Monday, January 30 is “Family time at Home” evening with request for no meetings scheduled this date.

g. Concert Series (Aydelott)

Commissioner Aydelott reported that sponsorships are coming in and bands are expected to be selected by March.
