Arts and Culture Commission Minutes - March 6, 2006

The regular meeting of the Arts and Culture Commission was called to order at 5:40 P.M. by Mike Aydelott.

Correspondence

a. Peninsula Museum of Art “Beaux and Eros” Gala invitation (2/14/06)

Approval of Minutes

Minutes of January 9, 2006 were reviewed.Motion made to approve the minutes as written, M/S Aguirre/Strauss.  Motion carried 4.0.

Unfinished Business

a. Strategic Planning for City Art Purchases

Postponed to Study Session scheduled for April 3, 2006 to review the public art plan and identify key San Carlos locations for public art plans.  Chairperson Aydelott requested adding an agenda item to discuss a Strategic Plan for Art and Culture Projects at the April 3 study session.

Public Comment:

Barbara Patterson expressed interest in supporting a developer’s fee towards funding public art to promote more public art venues in San Carlos.

b. Sesquicentennial Celebration

Recreation Superintendent Giampaoli Dillard reviewed information packets regarding the Sesquicentennial celebration events provided by Nancy Oliver who is representing the City of San Carlos on the committee on behalf of this commission.  The packet included an updated timeline of events, and a list of organizations that have received grant funding through the Sesquicentennial Celebration committee for historical projects.  The San Carlos Museum of History received a $1000 grant for the purchase of archival supplies to preserve historical items.

c. 2006 Budget Planning

Recreation Superintendent Giampaoli Dillard presented the draft work program for final approval and informed Commissioners of the City direction to identify additional 10% and 15% budget reduction plans for City Council review.  Motion made to submit proposal of reducing purchase of artwork to $1000 for 10% reduction and to$800 for 15% reduction.M/S Strauss/ Hoffman.Motion carried 4.0.


New Business

a.  City’s Strategic Plan

Commissioners received and reviewed the City’s Strategic Plan that came out of the City Council Retreat, identifying 3-5 year goals and 6 months objectives for the City.

b. San CarlosMuseum (Mahar)

Cheryl Hochstetter has been appointed board president.

c. San Carlos Fine Arts Association (Hoffman)

Commissioner Hoffman reported that the Fine Arts Association will not be hosting a Fall Festival this year, but are interested in proposing August Art Exhibits in Laurel Street Park and a November Art Exhibit.The Association is currently working on the upcoming April Spring Gallery Show and Hometown Days Art Exhibit.New website address for the Association is located at www.sancarlosart.org

d. Artshare (Aguirre)

e. Holiday Homes on Parade (Strauss)

No Report.

f. Week of the Family (Strauss)

No Report.

g. Concert Series (Aydelott)

Commissioner Aydelott reported that sponsorships are full.

Public Comment

Barbara Patterson suggested that the Commission consider projects to include: historical archeological impacts located along the Pulgas Creek and Devonshire encroachments; garden programs/ tours, and silent auction of donated artwork.
