Arts and Culture Commission Minutes - May 7, 2007

The regular meeting of the Arts and Culture Commission was called to order at 5:32 P.M. by Megan Mahar.

Roll Call

Commissioners present: Megan Mahar, Steven Aguirre, Mary Jo Hoffman, Joyce Strauss

Commissioners absent:  Mike Aydelott

Correspondence

  1. Fine Arts Association, April 14-15 Spring Gallery Show Invitation

Approval of Minutes

  1. Approve Minutes of April 2, 2007

Commission voted to approve minutes with the following corrections:

  • Page 2 – Committee Reports: Section B - San Carlos Museum: last sentence to change to:“The board will research and develop policies and procedures before supporting requests for photographs”
  • Page 2 – Committee Reports: Section D – Peninsula Arts Council; Commissioner Aguirre’s name is spelled incorrectly in the body of the text.

Unfinished Business

a. Display of Artwork from China

Commission requested study meeting to discuss

b. Laurel Street Public Art Plan Discussion

Commission needed more information. Staff will provide a staff report for Commission review.

New Business

a. Art in the Park Presentation

  • Paul Soares presented to commission plans and model for an interactive solar calendar that would mix science with art.
  • Commission expressed interest, but needs to understand city interest. Requested staff report to provide more information.

b.Mid-Term Grant Report:Fine Arts Association “Arts and Antiquities Event”

Presentation by Pat Leeper, President of San Carlos Fine Arts Association

  • Three A-Frames have been priced and ordered
  • The A-Frames will be used to place posters of the event at strategic city locations
  • Posters and handouts will be printed and include Arts and Culture Commission and City of San Carlos logo. Invitations were ordered prior to the award of the grant and therefore no identification of city support was on invitations.
  • Check has been received!

c. Election of officers

Motion to move election to September

Committee Reports (informational)

Sister Cities – Speaker Series – continues in June with Canada as topic

San Carlos Museum – No report

San Carlos Fine Arts Association – SCFAA will have display at Hometown Days. Pat Leeper discussed Arts and Antiquities in earlier presentation

Week of the Family – No report

Villagers – No report

Concert Series – No report

Peninsula Arts Council – Council is in budget review

Commission requests staff to list committees in monthly agenda.

All commission members thanked Joyce for her years of service. She will be greatly missed.

There being no further business, the meeting of May 7 was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
