Minutes of November 6, 2006

The regular meeting of the Arts and Culture Commission was called to order at 5:30 P.M. by Megan Mahar.

Roll Call

Commissioners present:  Megan Mahar, Mary Jo Hoffman, Joyce Strauss

Commissioners absent:  Mike Aydelott, Steven Aguirre

Also in Attendance:  Donna Giampaoli Dillard, Recreation Superintendent

Changes to the Order of Agenda

None.

Correspondence

a. Funding Request in Support of June 2007 Arts and Antiquities Event

Commissioners directed staff to respond to Mr. Leeper with information regarding upcoming grant application opportunity.

Approval of Minutes

Minutes of September 11, 2006 were reviewed.Discussion regarding Staff Report: Tree Lighting Event, to remove the word “Christmas” from description.Motion made to approve the minutes as amended, M/S Strauss/ Hoffman.  Motion carried 3:0.

Public Comment

Elizabeth Holden and Lauren Vogel in attendance on behalf of the Youth Advisory Council.

Unfinished Business

a. Sesquicentennial Celebration

Presentation by Nancy Oliver, appointed by the San Carlos Arts and Culture Commission to represent the City of San Carlos on this Countywide committee.Upcoming events are listed on the website www.smc150.org.  Ms. Oliver reported on upcoming events:Emigrants Day, Urban Lifestyles presentation, “History of San Mateo County” book signing, Video of Sesquicentennial Events.Ms. Oliver will seek information on availability of video for City archives.

b. Diwali Festival

Commissioners elected to cancel the event due to time restrictions and lack of available resources.Commissioners expressed interest in expanding the event next year to include a multi-cultural focus.

c. Draft Cultural Grant Criteria and Application

Commissioners reviewed the draft documents.Discussion regarding consolidating information from documents successfully used in two other communities.Motion made to make changes as noted to the existing draft documents and review final document for approval at January meeting.

M/S Strauss/ Hoffman.Motion carried 3:0.

Postponed to next meeting.

Commissioner Mahar reported on Sister Cities committee projects:

  • Proposing new speaker series
  • Upcoming NicaraguaSummit

b. San CarlosMuseum (Mahar)

Commissioner Mahar reported on Museum projects:

  • Brittan family descendents in town, social hosted in their honor
  • Holiday Open House scheduled for December 1

c. San Carlos Fine Arts Association (Hoffman)

  • No Report

d. Artshare (Aguirre)

  • No Report

e. Holiday Homes on Parade (Strauss)

Commissioner Strauss reported on recent meeting with Event Committee and reviewed event marketing materials and strategies.Commissioner Strauss requested a New Business item be put on the January meeting agenda to Review and evaluate City sponsorship of Holiday Homes on Parade Event.
