Senior Advisory Board Minutes - December 5, 2007

The regular meeting of the San Carlos Senior Advisory Board was called to order at 9:10 AM by Board Chair Gerry Cristoni.

1.  Roll Call       

Board Members present: Gerry Cristoni, Julie Becker, Jack Fisher, Kim Alchimisti, & Dan Bellack

Board Members absent:  N/A

Also present:  Kathy Giraud, Interim Recreation Supervisor

2.  Changes to the Order of the Agenda

None

3.  Approval of Minutes

M/S/C 5:0 to approve the minutes of meeting of November 5, 2007.

5.  Unfinished Business

a) Upgrading Design Standards for ACC

Interim Supervisor Giraud reported on her conversation with Director Weiss.He asks that the Board draw up and submit a specific list of enhancements/improvements for the Center.Then a determination will be made on which items can be handled by General Services staff and which items will need to be budgeted. Following discussion, the Board agreed to start the project list 2nd week of January 2008 and invite an interior design student to attend the ‘walk through’.Board Chair Cristoni mentioned that a retired interior decorator friend may also be a resource.It was suggested that as Board members use and visit the Center, notes/observations should be made about possible enhancements.Other comments were comfort level of furniture, overall lighting issue including hallway, possible donations from local lighting companies, inexpensive but decorative accents added.

6.  New Business

a) Parks, Open Space, Buildings & Other Recreational Facilities Master Plan Focus Group

Board Member Bellack is researching information on Harris Design and will attend the December 5, 2007 Community Meeting.

b) Bunco Night Special Event

Board members Alchimisti & Becker led discussion on date (mid-late April 2008), dessert menu, 150 attendees, possible $10 p/p charge.Date will be finalized in January.

c) Health Screening Programs

Interim Supervisor Giraud reported on current attendance figures for blood pressure and dental screenings.Board member Becker suggested expanding the program with an instructional/educational based format, marketed as ‘family education’.She offered to help coordinate volunteers to give talks on such topics as first aid, signs of stroke, ‘train the trainer’ for neighborhoods, etc.Interim Supervisor Giraud will check feasibility of this idea with Department management.

7.  Board Reports

Board Members Alchimisti and Bellack attended the reception to meet the final candidates for the Senior Services Recreation Supervisor position and gave their views on which candidates appeared to be the best ‘fit’ for the Adult Community Center.

Board Member Bellack complimented staff on the recent SCUM Luncheon held at the ACC.

Suggestions for improvement of the Holiday Bazaar (November 16-17) included making it more family friendly, holding a Gingerbread House contest, increasing number of local vendors, adding a book sale, and enhancing publicity.

Board Chair Cristoni asked about the status of the flagpole project for the front of the ACC.The pole and flags have been purchased and location for installation approved.Interim Supervisor Giraud will check with Barry Weiss.
