Senior Advisory Board Minutes - June 6, 2007

San Carlos Adult Community Center San Carlos, CA 94070 The regular meeting of the San Carlos Senior Advisory Board was called to order at 9:15 AM by Board Chair Gerry Cristoni. 1. Roll Call Board Members present: Gerry Cristoni, Jack Fisher, and Dan Bellack
Board Members absent: Kim Alchimisti and Julie Becker
Also present: Gerard Manuel, Recreation Supervisor, Sue Davis, ACC Participant, Donna Giampaoli-Dillard, Recreation Superintendent 2. Changes to the Order of the Agenda
None. 3. Approval of Minutes Board member Bellack made the motion to approve the minutes of meeting April 4, 2007 and seconded by board member Jack Fisher. Motion carried 3:0. 4. Correspondence
Supervisor Manuel presented each board member an invitation that was sent by the San Carlos Museum of History and San Carlos Fine Arts Association event.
5. Unfinished Business 5a) Proposed Changes to Facility Room Uses:Supervisor Manuel sent the advisory board a staff report on hosting “Focus Groups for the Adult Center.” Board Member Bellack commented that contract costs should be reviewed to ensure that total costs include prep work and meeting facilitation. Supervisor Manuel will call potential group facilitators and clarify costs.After reviewing the staff report, the Senior Advisory Board provided the following comments: - Board Member Bellack commented that a “typical focus” group usually brings “like-minded” individuals with similar agendas to discuss similar issues. The Focus Group invitation list presented in the staff report is a representation of different groups and that can pose a challenge to the effectiveness of the Focus Group environment;
- Board Member Bellack suggested that the people on the invitation list be invited to the ACC for an orientation meeting, providing information regarding center mission and programs so they can be familiar with the center and be better prepared to participate in the Focus Group.
6. New Business 6a) Budget for FY 2007-08:Supervisor Manuel sent the advisory board a staff report on the impacts of the budget reduction for the Adult Community Center.Supervisor Manuel shared that the Information and Referral Services will be impacted and will no longer be offered to the community in the new Fiscal Year. Supervisor Manuel shared strategies the ACC will review in addressing this reduction which will include soliciting additional help from center volunteers and creating a “FAQ Sheet regarding Information and Referral” (Frequently Asked Questions) that will be provided to the community to address their questions.This reduction will impact Joan’s hours at the ACC.Supervisor Manuel shared that the Parks and Recreation Department reorganized internally and reallocated resources for Joan to work 20 hours per week. Joan’s responsibility will shift considerably and will now be focused on Special Events and ACC Trips. 6b) Summary of Adult Community Center Annual Evaluation:Supervisor Manuel shared the summary of the Annual Evaluation that was completed in February 2007. Overall, the community center facility and programs received favorable ratings from the community. Advisory Board Members commented that they enjoyed reading the comments from the Annual Evaluation.

8a) Upcoming Events and Programs: Supervisor Manuel shared information on the following ACC events in June: - Author Amy Gorman, in collaboration with the Library, is coming to the ACC on June 7 for an onsite lecture and movie screening.
- Spaghetti Feed and Swing Night is scheduled for Saturday, June 9.
- Review at the Parkview Room is scheduled for Saturday, June 16.
- Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Friday, June 29
New Program planned with Sequoia Hospital, “Road to Personal Wellness” was cancelled due to lack of registration.
8b) April and May Event Recap Supervisor Manuel shared information on the following ACC events that occurred in February: - CHP Collaboration with Supervisor Adrienne Tissier in April had a great turnout (over 60 attended).
- Both trips planned in May sold out with a waiting list (trip to River Rock Casino Trip and Brookdale Lodge
- Supervisor Manuel shared his resignation news to the Board.Supervisor Manuel thanked the Board for their support in the last year and a half.Superintendent Dillard commented that the recruitment for replacement has started and encouraged the board to share feedback on the recruitment process. Superintendent also shared transition strategies the department is currently implementing to help the ACC staff.
