September 6, 2006

The regular meeting of the San Carlos Senior Advisory Board was called to order at 9:09 AM by Board Chair Gerry Cristoni.

1. Roll Call

Board Members present: Gerry Cristoni, Kim Alchimisti and Jack Fisher

Board Members absent: Julie Becker and Dan Bellack

Also present: Gerard Manuel, Recreation Supervisor

Donna Giampaoli Dillard, Recreation Superintendent

2. Changes to the Order of Agenda

No Changes

3. Approval of Minutes

Board member Kim Alchimisti made the motion to approve the minutes of meeting August 2, 2006 and seconded by board member Jack Fisher. Motion carried 3:0.

4. Correspondence

Supervisor Manuel shared that he received an email from Margaret Pye regarding a proposal from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee on a “Crossing Guard” program. Supervisor Manuel commented that the email correspondence was brief and shared that he will contact Ms. Pye seeking more information and details. Supervisor Manuel will present the proposal at the next scheduled Senior Advisory Board Meeting.

5. Unfinished Business

a) Update of Name Plate on Monument Sign:

Supervisor Manuel reported that a new name plate and new cover for the monument sign facing San Carlos Avenue has been ordered and is expected to be installed soon.

6. New Business

a) City of San Carlos Strategic Plan

Superintendent Dillard provided a review and summary of the City of San Carlos Strategic Plan to the Senior Advisory Board.Superintendent Dillard reviewed the plan including the goals and objectives.Senior Advisory Board members present reviewed the plan and provided no comment other than seeking clarity on some of the plan’s points.

b) Senior Transportation

The Senior Advisory Board has been discussing the issue of Senior Transportation. Supervisor Manuel suggested that the Senior Advisory Board schedule a Study Session to discuss the issue. A study session is fact gathering time where topics are researched and discussed to enhance knowledge and understanding of the topic, but no action maybe taken.Board agreed to the study session. Board member Fisher motioned to use the SAB meeting time scheduled for October as the time to hold a study session to discuss senior transportation- Board member Alchimisti seconded. Motion carried 3:0. Supervisor Manuel will send board members an updated Senior Mobility Action Plan for review and preparation for the study session. Board member Alchimisti shared that she will research transportation program at a senior center in Santa Cruz.

8. Staff Reports

a) Upcoming Events and Programs:

Supervisor Manuel shared information on the following ACC events in September:

  • Sept. 8 is the community lecture on Diabetes Education with SequoiaHospital
  • Sept 15 – “End of Summer” Barbecue Luncheon
  • Sept. 30 – “Review at the Parkview Room”

Shared plans on intergeneration special events with Kindercourt Schools – first event is scheduled for Halloween where children from Kindercourt will participate in Halloween activities with ACC users

b) August Event Recap

Supervisor Manuel shared information on the following ACC events in August:

  • August Luncheon: Broadway by the Bay and had an attendance of 140 people and 20 volunteers;
  • Kiwanis Club of San Carlos hosted a Senior Social that had an attendance of 56;
  • ACC hosted a lecture on the topic of “Maximizing Memory” that had an attendance of 32;
  • San Carlos Rotary is now hosting their weekly meeting at the ACC;

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 10:55 am to the Study Session.
