Youth Advisory Council Minutes - March 12, 2008

7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

San Carlos Youth Center, Dance Studio

1.  Call to Order:  7:07

2.  Roll Call: Lauren, Matt, Jordan, Aaron, Josh, Brett, Chris, Kristen, Anthony

3.  Approval of the Minutes: M/S vote on March and February in April

4.  Council Reports

4a.  Youth Center

  • Youth Center – Youth Center got a new PS3 donated by Youth Center Foundation
  • Youth Center Foundation Info – Nothing to report

4b.  Other Youth Councils – Jeri

  • YAC Attack – the Council had fun but some members felt that it was not as enriching as they thought it would be. It felt segregated, not a lot of networking opportunities.
  • YAC Visitations – suggested to have YAC sleepover at the SCYC with Los Altos and Burlingame YAC’s.

4c.  Treasurer’s Report – $16,118.69

4d.  Historian – nothing to report

4e.  Public Relations/NewsletterYAC must email Aaron to get articles published.

4f.  Donations committeeInteract Club of Serra HS has requested funds to support schools in Honduras. Motion to donate $100 to Interact: opposed 4, for 3, abstain 2; motion denied. The Children’s Theater has requested to be a theatre partner. Motion to donate $500 to the Children’s Theatre passed, M/s Lauren/Jordan, all in favor, motion passed. Motion to donate $2,500 to Youth Center for new HDTV for TV lounge, M/s Anthony/Jordan,all in favor, motion passed.

4g.  Youth Assets Committee

  • Youth Assets Community – Parks and Recreation Commission presentation got pushed back to May 7th.
  • Young Consumer Champions – Gave March 2008 award to Guaranty Bank for youth friendly tellers.Bingo letter is going to be sent out to businesses. Bingo cards are made up and ready.Jordan will review with Jeri.

4h.  Youth Liaisons

  • City Council/EDAC – nothing to report
  • Arts and Culture – Youth Art Contest and Award
  • Parks & Recreation – nothing to report
  • Senior Advisory – nothing to report
  • Traffic and Transportation – no meeting
  • San Carlos P&R Foundation – no meeting
  • GPAC – meeting on Wednesday for land use alternatives.

5.  Sub-Committee Reports

5a.  YAC Dances - need chaperones. Ticket sales - Thursday: Nicole, Friday: Anthony. YAC needs to help out more before and after dances because staff is doing most of the pre-dance work as well as setup and clean up.A lot of discussion regarding commitment of the YAC for their dances.10 voted yes, and 2 voted no that YAC should take on the full responsibilities of the dances and really work to put them on.

5b.  Bulletin Boards

  • St. Charles – none, flyers put on front desk table
  • Youth Center – done
  • Tierra Linda – done
  • Central – done

5c.  Volunteer Projects

  • Library – new children’s librarian, Michelle Newman
  • Special Olympics – Basketball teams were very fun and the event was very fun on February 16th.Those that volunteered had a great time.
  • Outer Community Volunteer Project – no research yet, but forthcoming.
  • Pass Christian – Sheryl Pomerenk received our donation and was very thankful.She suggested putting the dance proceeds into the Pass Christian fund set up by the City.Sheryl will make sure the funds go towards the rebuilding efforts of the Pass.Good job YAC!

6.  Unfinished Business

6a.  YAC Trainings -Jeri will send out dates/times for trainings.

6b.  Recruitment Drive – none

6c.  Burton Park Playground – Anthony wants to start a skate park committee and start surveying at dances. Anthony, Brett, Preven, Kristen, and Chris volunteered.

7.  New Business

7a.  Relay for Life – YAC wants to collaborate with staff,Matt will coordinate

7b.  Youth Vote – Email Jeri names of teachers in your schools who teach Government, Civics, etc.We will have Youth Vote in November for Presidential election.

7c.  YAC commitment - YAC needs to hang out at the YC more often to talk to the participants and get more youth involved in the YAC

8.  Correspondence

8a.  Incoming – letter from Rick Carpenter about buying a new TV for the TV Room with funds from the General Fund. Motion approved to buy a new TV for the Youth Center. M/S Jordan/Brett
