Edgewood Road Closure - This Weekend

The closure of Edgewood Road will begin August 31st at 10:00 p.m. and last until September 4th at 6:00 a.m. During this time, traffic will detour to Cordilleras Road.

This will enable contractors to install a new 5 foot diameter drinking water pipeline across Edgewood Road as part of the Hetch Hetchy Water System Improvement Program.

The new pipeline will be installed using an open trench process which involves excavating the trench, laying and welding segments of the pipe, then backfilling the trench. This work will require the full closure of Edgewood Road from Cervantes Road to Cordilleras Road as crews work in the street. Traffic controls will be in place.

We appreciate your continuing patience and support as this critical work takes place to improve your drinking water delivery system.  We will work to minimize inconvenience although road detours are necessary. This new drinking water pipeline is an essential component for maintaining the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System, which supplies nearly 100% of your community's drinking water and delivers water to over 2.6 million residents in the counties of Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco.

For any questions or concerns about the construction, please call the 24-hour project hotline at 1-800-571-6610 or visit the project blog at for updates.

This construction is part of the SFPUC Water System Improvement Program, a $4.6 billion bond-funded program to seismically upgrade and repair the regional water system’s aging pipelines, tunnels, and dams. This Bay Division Peninsula project includes a 9-mile, 5-foot diameter welded steel pipeline seismically designed to withstand an earthquake, and will allow the SFPUC to take existing, older pipelines out of service for maintenance and repair.
