City of San Carlos Parks Master Plan - Community Workshop April 2, 2008

The 3rd of three San Carlos Parks Master Plan community workshops is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the San Carlos Library, 610 Elm Street, Community Rooms A&B as part of the regular San Carlos Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. This workshop will review the Action Plan component of the Parks Master Plan. The Action Plan defines specific improvements to the City’s parks, recreation buildings, open space, and other recreational facilities. It addresses both existing facilities and potential new additions to the City’s park system. The recommendations are reflective of extensive community input and Commission direction garnered through public meetings, workshops, public intercept events, focus groups, stakeholder interviews, website outreach, and a statistically valid telephone survey.

The City of San Carlos is embarking upon the preparation of its first-ever master plan for all of its parks, open space areas, buildings, and other recreational facilities. The purpose of the master plan is to provide the City with a long term vision for its park system, by identifying needs and creating a plan of action to implement needed improvements and changes to the existing parks system. The plan will also include a strategy for funding the capital improvements, and for ongoing operation and maintenance.

The first community workshop on September 5 focused on community input as part of developing the needs assessment. The second community workshop on December 5 focused on the Preliminary Action Plan recommendations and significant community input.

What will happen after the April meeting? – The Parks and Recreation Commission will then provide recommendations regarding the plan to staff and the consulting firm Harris Design.Following the meeting, the Action Plan recommendations will be refined based on Commission direction and public input. An Implementation Plan will then be prepared that will include the estimated costs of the improvements, a funding strategy, and operation and maintenance guidelines. All of this information will then be incorporated into the Draft Master Plan, which will be presented for public and City Council review.

We encourage San Carlos citizens to participate in planning for the future. Please visit www.cityofsancarlos.org/ParksMasterPlan or call 802-4286 to learn more and give your input.
