As part of our ongoing effort to prevent crime in the community, members of the San Carlos Police Department have developed a series of educational presentations. These presentations are made to service clubs, schools and community groups in San Carlos. To expand the usefulness of this material, we are now bringing this material to the Internet. We hope you find helpful and of interest.-- Greg Rothaus, Police Chief, City of San Carlos

Preventing Theft and Burglary

Theft and Burglary are two of the most common types of crimes we see in police work. While San Carlos is a good community in which to live and work, these crimes do take place here.

The San Carlos Police Department would like to remind business owners of some basic crime prevention tips. Together we can work to limit the number of crimes and increase the likelihood of suspect apprehension.

Crime Prevention Tips for Business

Here are somme key crime prevention tips for businesses:

  • Report suspicious activity/people to the police.
  • If a crime takes place, report it to the police immediately.
  • Do not touch or disturb anything.
  • Limit vision obscurements. At night exterior lights are helpful to officers on patrol.
  • All cash should be removed from the register and the register drawer left open (a closed drawer entices a thief to pry just to check).
  • Cash should be removed from the business at the close of each business day. If this is not possible, cash left in the business should be locked in a safe.
  • Doors should be secured with good quality dead bolts.
  • Alarms and surveillance cameras are good but they are an investment. They require maintenance and employees must be trained on how to use them properly. If you elect to install either or both of these devices, contact several reputable dealers and get estimates. The California Alarm Association can provide you with suggestions on dealers to contact. The California Alarm Association can be contacted at (800) 437-7658.
