Putting the Fun back into Fitness! The San Carlos Youth Center continues to stride for excellence in Youth Fitness! With tons of opportunities to get fit, Youth Center participants are encouraged to work-out or play for at least an hour each day. Some of the many opportunities participants have to be active are “Toning with Torre”, Walk Across America, and the Youth Center’s Daily games and activities. Every day participants are eager to get into the gym to start running around and to play the day’s game. Toning with Torre is our new fitness program with our very own Kid Fitness Instructor, Torre! Every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm participants are encouraged to engage themselves in whatever crazy activity Torre has planned. Activities range from Circuit Training to Crazy Dodgeball with sit-ups, to Flag Football to Obstacle Courses. There is an unlimited amount of fitness activities to participate in and it’s all free! If you are between 10-17 years old, come down and get a free workout every Tuesday and Thursday and have fun! Every Wednesday Youth Center participants get out and get their walk on! Accompanied by a Youth Center staff member, participants get a chance to roam the streets of San Carlos on this fun, casual walk! Youth Center staff record the miles participants walk each week and try to make it to the next city in miles on the Walk Across America Map, displayed at the Youth Center. It’s all free and all fun! Contact the Youth Center at (650) 802-4471 for more information on the next Walk! And let’s not forget about the daily activities we have going on at the Youth Center! With Dodgeball every week and a daily game of Basketball going on in the gym, there is no way kids can be bored! Our after-school activities include, but are not limited to: Indoor Soccer, Dodgeball, Basketball, Volleyball, Relay Races, Fitness Challenges, Jump Roping, and More! Stop by the Youth Center and pick-up a copy of our calendar with all our fun and fit activities! Upcoming Youth Advisory Council Dances!!! Check out our Upcoming Dances: - Friday, May 16th

The return of Agro Club has been a huge success. First, Agro Club participants joined together to clean up the side yard. They got down and dirty by leveling out the ground, picking weeds, throwing away trash, and spraying the ground with weed killer. Then, Home Depot got a team together to volunteer their time and labor. They also donated all of the plants, planter boxes, stepping stones, and benches for the garden along with gift certificates to purchase other needed supplies. The Agro Club and the Art Program joined together in the month of July. Youth Center participants made plant markers, personalized stepping stones, and a huge thank you banner and cookie flowers for the Home Depot volunteers. Now, the Agro Club is in charge of maintaining and harvesting the garden. Agro Club participants take turns watering and harvesting the garden when the vegetables and herbs are ripe for the picking. Agro Club donated eggplants from the garden to the snack program which in turn made eggplant parmesan and our roma tomatoes are making their way into our daily snacks as well! Agro Club looks forward to harvesting the garden during the fall. We will also be making desert terrariums that participants can take home and take care of. Let’s keep cultivating! For more information on the Agro Club, contact Abby at the Youth Center at (650) 802-4471! We’re always looking for more “green-thumbs” to help out in the garden! Let’s Walk Across America! Join us in our "Walk Across America!" program. Together we will walk around San Carlos and track our miles until we have trekked across the country! Our journey will begin here in San Carlos and eventually we will earn enough miles to get all the way to New Jersey! Since last spring we have completed 1284.16 miles so far! We’re only 1890 miles away to our 4th destination – Dallas, Texas! And just because the weather is starting to look a little gloomy does not mean we don’t walk! On a recent rainy day, around 40 Youth Center participants and Youth Center staff walked laps around the Youth Center gym’s perimeter and walked a combined 91.7 miles in 1 hour! One of our participants, Will Devoto, ran a total of 111 laps around the gym adding approximately 11 miles to our total by himself! If you think you can beat Will’s 111 laps, then join us every Wednesday and help us Walk Across America! Band Night & the 4th Annual Battle!
With no where to showcase their talents the Youth Center hosts a quarterly Band Night for Middle School and High School students. On September 29th we showcased 4 Peninsula bands, 2 of which are from San Carlos with members who are participants at the Youth Center. 100 Middle– and High-School students attended to listen to some great local talent! Band Nights give the more “alternative” group of youth a place to hang out on a Friday night versus hanging out at an unsafe place. The Youth Center staff is already gearing up for the 4th Annual High School Battle of the Bands on Friday, March 30th, 2007. We will be accepting demos from High School bands from all over the Bay Area. 4 or 5 lucky bands will be chosen from the demos to “battle” and the winning band will receive a cash prize! Winners in the past have received $200 to $500 in prizes! For more information on Band Nights or submitting a demo, please call the Youth Center at (650) 802-4471! Kid’s Night Out!
Parents, the Youth Center staff knows it is hard to find time for yourself while raising active and healthy children so we have created the perfect way to give you a night off! Kid’s Night Out allows your children, K-5th grade, to experience the fun of the Youth Center while you can enjoy a night out on the town! The Youth Center staff will provide a fun-filled night of games, activities, movies and dinner for your children from 6:00pm-10:00pm on select Friday Nights throughout the Fall! Each Kid’s Night Out costs only $30 for the first child and $15 for each additional sibling that signs up. We will provide your kids with tons of fun and supervision while you enjoy a well deserved rest! The first two Kid’s Night Out went off with great success! Our second event sold out! In September, kids enjoyed a Jungle-themed evening with animal masks and a Jungle-themed dinner while watching Madagascar. On our most recent Kid’s Night Out, participants were encouraged to use their imagination with an Egg Drop and watching the movie Robots. Each Kid’s Night Out is creatively themed and full of tons of fun and memories! For more information on our next Kid’s Night Out, please call the Youth Center at (650) 802-4471. Sign up early for the next few Kid’s Night Out as they are filling up quickly! Treat yourself to a night off, while your kids enjoy the fun the Youth Center creates! Project Safe Halloween
Project Safe Halloween will be on Halloween this year from 5pm-7pm at locations all over San Carlos! Trick-or-Treaters can attend the Youth Center, Kiwanis Building, City Hall, Library, and the Adult Community Center to receive a free, safe Halloween toy or a Glow-in-the-Dark bracelet that says “Be Safe, Be Seen on Halloween”. The Youth Advisory Council is sponsoring this event again this year and will be volunteering their time to give out the treats at each location in their Halloween costumes! Last year’s Project Safe Halloween was visited by over 200 Trick-or-Treaters. We hope to exceed this number this year and be visited by more than 300 Trick-or-Treaters! The Youth Development Staff and the Youth Advisory Council cares a great deal about the safety and well-being of San Carlos Youth. We are all really excited to be offering this great, safe program again this Halloween! Happy Halloween and be safe! Message from the YAC!
Many events have been thoroughly planned for the months ahead. As usual there will be a dance every month (the 3rd Friday of the month). We hope you can attend all of the following events stated below. In October there will once again be a Project Safe Halloween. This year, glow in the dark “livestrong-like” bracelets will be given out to all of the participants. We expect this to be loads of fun, and we recommend you try it out. In November there will be a huge toy swap. This is great if you are looking for gifts for the upcoming holidays. December brings us the Annual Tree Lighting, as well as the December Toy drive. In January, week of the family occurs so try and organize a family dinner or game night if possible. The events above are only a few of the great activities happening this year! More events will be posted in this newsletter and at the Youth Center when they are finalized. Thank You and have a great Fall!
