The 5th Annual Short Story Contest

It's that time again! The 5th Annual Short Story Contest has arrived! Put on your creative thinking caps and get typing! There will be 4 categories this year with a winner in each category! The Short Story must be at least 800 words in length and must be Youth Center appropriate! All stories must be submitted by 7:00pm on Friday, April 24th, 2008. The categories are Best Action/Adventure, Best Comedy, Best Science Fiction, and Most Original. Submit all entries to Megan in the Homework Center at the Youth Center. Entries can also me mailed to the Youth Center attention Short Story Contest. For more information, please contact Megan at the Youth Center, 802-4471.

Official Rules

  • Must be in 5th - 8th grade to participate
  • Please include a cover sheet with your first and last name, home phone number, school name, and name of your English teacher.
  • Your Short Story must be a minimum of 1 1/2 pages or 800 words in length. There is no restriction on the maximum length of the story. Papers must be typed, no handwritten stories please. Use double spacing and size 12 Times New Roman font.
  • The Short Story can be on any topic that you choose as long as the content is Youth Center appropriate (refer to the Y.C. rules on the registration form, available at the Youth Center Front Desk.)
  • The Short Story will be graded using four criteria, each criteria counting for 25% of the overall score:
        • Spelling and Grammar 25%
        • Creativity 25%
        • Language and Sentence Structure 25%
        • Organization 25%

The highest score will determine the winner in each category!

  • All entries must be submitted to the Youth Center by 7:00pm, April 24th, 2008. The Youth Center closes at 7:00pm that day and entries will not be accepted past the deadline.
