Development at Wheeler Plaza - Update Letter to Community (January 16, 2009)

January 16, 2009

Re: Potential Development at Wheeler Plaza

Dear Property or Business Owner,

Since the late 1990's, Wheeler Plaza surface parking lot has been periodically considered by the community as a potential development site for a mixed use project that would add residential and retail space, increase parking, and expand upon the vibrancy of the downtown.

At it's next meeting on Monday, January 26th, the San Carlos City Council will consider selecting a development team to initiate a community engagement process that could eventually lead to a conceptual plan for the site. At this meeting, two development teams will be interviewed as finalist from a Request From Qualifications process which began last October. The City is seeking a partner which can collaborate with local residents, businesses and property owners to prepare a project design that complements our existing downtown, has a positive impact on our surrounding businesses and does so with high-quality materials and finishes.

This is the first in a series of update letters that you will receive, assuming a development team partner is selected to move forward. We are interested in creating as many opportunities to hear your feedback and concerns about the development of the Wheeler site and to solicit your early input on the details of any potential project concepts.

Please feel free to contact me at (650) 802-4220 or msawicki@cityofsancarlos.org if you have questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Mark Sawicki, Economic Development and Housing Manager
