San Carlos recognizes the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) isa key strategy to achieve our climate goals. Expanding access to reliable and convenient places to charge EVs in San Carlos is an important part of this transition.

Peninsula Clean Energy EV Ready Program

The EV Ready Program administered by Peninsula Clean Energy offers no-cost technical assistance and rebates to help install EV charging stations at multifamily and commercial properties across San Mateo County. By participating in the program property owners will receive:
  • Site visit. A filed technician will conduct an onsite evaluation of your facility.
  • Load analysis. Analysis of the number of chargers that can be supported by the current electrical infrastructure.
  • Site layout. A proposed parking layout.
  • Contractor bids. Support creating bid documents and assessing bids from contractors.
  • Installation process. Oversight to make sure the project is delivered in a timely manner.
  • Rebate assistance. Support procuring rebates once the project is successfully completed.

Public Charging Stations in San Carlos

We are continuing to install more EV chargers in public parking lots across the city. We currently offer level 2 charging in the northern end of the Wheeler Plaza parking garage and DC fast charging in the San Carlos Library parking garage. EV Charging 101

EV chargers are classified into three categories: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 or direct current (DC) fast chargers. Important differences between each category include:

  • Power output. This is how much power a charger can generate and is expressed in kilowatts (kW).
  • Charging speed. This is the number of miles added to the EV’s battery per hour of charging and depends on the charger’s power output.

Untitled design (4)Level 1 Charging

Level 1 charging involves plugging into a standard household outlet which can provide roughly 1 kW to 2 kW of power. At this speed a typical EV will add roughly 3 to 6 miles of range per hour of charging. While not the fastest, charging overnight at Level 1 can offset the most people's average daily driving needs and is a great option for homes and workplaces.

Level 2 Charging

A Level 2 charger uses a 220 volt or 240 volt outlet, the same outlet for an electric water heater or clothes dryer. A level 2 charger can provide between 3 kW to 19 kW and provides a full charge for a 300-mile range battery in about 6-8 hours. Level 2 charging is great for those who want a faster charge at home, at work, or in public parking lots.

Level 3 DC Fast Charger

DC Fast Chargers can provide between 50 kW to 350 kW. Depending on the EV, DC fast chargers can currently produce a 10-80% charge for a 300-mile range battery in as little as 20 minutes. DC Fast chargers are typically used during longer road trips located in areas near highways or freeways.
